Five Generations
Dom's Barber Shop: A Legacy of Tradition and Family Bonds
Since 1912, the essence of timelessness has lived within the walls of Dom's Barber Shop, an enduring establishment that bridges the past with the present. Founded by Dominic Monroe's grandfather-in-law, John Hingel, on Youngstown's Steel Street, the shop has witnessed the ebbs and flows of history, embracing generations of clients seeking not just haircuts but connections to an era gone by. In 1971, Dominic Monroe opened the doors to his own chapter of this cherished lineage when he established Dom's Barber Shop in Poland.
Dominic's stories, like the strands of hair he trimmed, interwove tales of generations past with his own experiences. The shop became a haven amidst the roar of steel mills, a place where the rhythms of the city's heartbeat synchronized with the hum of clippers. As the years passed, Dominic's son, John Monroe, a fifth-generation barber, emerged as a quiet presence behind the barber chairs, representing the legacy's unbroken thread.
Dominic's health struggles in 2010 cast a shadow over the shop, dimming its lights temporarily. But the community of friends and customers he had cultivated continued to wait, longing for his return. In the midst of this, John, who had carved his own path in the corporate world, felt the echoes of his family's tradition beckon him. Despite initial reluctance, he embraced his legacy, trained at the Akron Barber’s College, and sat in the same chairs where his father and forefathers had worked their magic.
John, now revitalizes the shop, cutting hair and weaving stories just as his father and forefathers did. The shop's historical artifacts, from photos of Joe Paterno to a well-worn cash register, stand as silent witnesses to the stories that have unfolded within its walls.
The story of Dom's Barber Shop is not just about haircuts; it's about the continuation of a craft that's both timeless and evolving. John Monroe, an extraordinarily dedicated barber, stands as custodian of stories that reflect the tapestry of Youngstown and its people. The shop, under John's care, holds the promise of preserving a cherished tradition while embracing the new.
As Dominic once said, "Barbering is one of the oldest professions... you're not just a barber; you're an electrician, a carpenter, a janitor, a nurse or whatever, because you hear all these stories each day." Dom's Barber Shop remains a living testament to this philosophy, a place where the past and present coexist, and where the echoes of generations are lovingly carried forward.
